003 - The Stories We tell Ourselves
Hi,
It is coming to the end of the summer holidays and something has been bothering me for a little while now.
"We tell ourselves that happiness will result from success but what if we have that equation wrong?”
We are told from a young age that we should work hard to be successful, when we are successful we will be happy. This week, I came across an interesting video talking about the book ‘The Happiness Advantage” (Shawn Achor). Perhaps we have the equation the wrong way around, success isn’t an ingredient of happiness but a product of it. Perhaps being positive will help to create success.
This resonated with me - I have been bothered by teacher groups online and articles that I have read, there seems to be a complete disconnect between how we want children to feel next year and what we expect for ourselves. We care so much about the well-being and happiness of our class - I can barely go online without seeing 'The Colour Monster’ (Anna Llenas) or well-being stations. Yet as teachers, we are looking at persevering through next year, firefighting problems and a general sense of malaise.
We have the option to tell ourselves a different story. Yes, we are going to do everything we can for our class well-being but we will also recieve so much positivity back. What if success this year looks like a happy classroom?
Three things
One thing that may help you. – If you are thinking about how to improve your productivity (especially digitally) this is a great place to start.
One person I think is worth listening to - 🎧 I enjoyed Tim Ferriss’ podcast speaking to Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks
One resource I love – This maths station by miss.c.primary
