012 - You are a person who teaches.
Hi,
On average teachers with less than six years experience work nearly 19 hours a week outside of school time. In the current climate, this figure has probably risen. In the UK this week, we only found out that we would be back in school tomorrow on Saturday.
There have been strong links made between staff wellbeing and their performance. However, this shouldn’t be the focus for reducing workload. You are not a teacher. You are a person that has a job to teach children. Your well-being is important because your well-being is important.
“What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.”
-Dwight Eisenhower
I read this quote this week, and it made me think about the pressure we put on ourselves. I was thinking of tools we can use to eliminate behaviours that waste time and do not move us closer towards our goals.
The quickest way to complete a task is to decide it doesn’t need to be done. While not a call to laziness, it is a prompt to think about the value or the daily tasks we complete. Below is an image of an Eisenhower decision matrix. It is a tool that I intend to use to delete tasks that take up mental energy but are not productive.
