009 - Finding a balance

Hi,

If like me you have spent too many nights working after 10pm this week, there may be something for us to think about. Cyril Northcote Parkinson wrote in the first line of his essay for the economist that  “It is a commonplace observation that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”  1

The quantity of work that we have to do is unlimited. We could always plan more exciting lessons, give better feedback in books or research the best way to lead our subjects.

If we combine these two ideas - we have a job with an unlimited workload and that work will expand to fill whatever time we allocate to it. No matter what your management does to help with a work life balance, the best thing that you can do is to set yourself a limit and stick to it.
